The Growing Abbey Family of Happy Vacationers

powered by TripAdvisor

Hidden in plain sight between Cancun and Playa del Carmen lies the little fishing village of Puerto Morelos. This is one of the last colonial villages along the Mayan coast, and a closely guarded secret among those who like to escape frigid winters of the north. The town has a recently updated square, where children and musicians play. Restaurants, markets, and shops line the perimeter, offering anything a tourist wants. Fishermen bring in their catch for sale at the nearby pier. Snorkeling, scuba diving and day trips can be arranged here. It is a quiet place, where the sound of laughter is as common as the dogs sleeping in the streets.  One could rent a car, but most people walk or bicycle easily to get from one end of town to the other.

Abbey del Sol lies near the north end of Av. Ninos Heroes. The complex is made up of two locations: each across the street from the other. Abbey One is a lovely renovated home with three units above it. Abbey Two is a bit newer and larger, with multiple units. Much thought has been given to ensure the comfort and convenience of the guest. It is easy to cook in the units, which have well equipped kitchens with blenders, microwaves, and toasters. Beach chairs and umbrellas are provided for days on the beach, and lounge chairs for days at either of the pools. The staff  are willing and gracious to help with just about anything a guest could want; from arranging for airport transportation to massages, cooking classes, trips to the Colonnia, guided tours, and many other recreational activities.  The gardens are the nicest in town, and their loving care is apparent by the huge bougainvillea draping over the walls.

Artisanal touches abound, hand-wrought iron gates provide security, intricate stonework paves the walks through each of Abbey One and Two, and the flowers of the gardens continue to flow through the murals hand painted on the walls.

Each year is better than the last, with constant improvements/enhancements being made. The management and owners are always helpful and engaging; creating  friendships with guests, many of whom return yearly. Abbey del Sol is a real treasure, but one that’s not too hard to find, in the Mayan Riviera.

"Puerto Morelos is such a lovely place. The best way I can describe the little town is 'filled with the best of both worlds': a quiet place to get away, or a place to obtain excitement and typical fun on a vacation. Snorkeling and visiting the cenotes was such a personal experience, compared to going in the busy tourist areas.

And from my own experience I know one of the lodging options at Abbey del Sol will suit your needs. I have stayed at both Abbey One and Abbey Too, and was thoroughly pleased with each! One can't go wrong with the personal touch of the properties, and the staff is ABSOLUTELY happy to help and make your stay enjoyable."

“My family and I have been avid travelers throughout the Mexican Riviera for the past 18 years, and for the past three years I have found my paradise in Puerto Morelos. Playa del Carmen exploded with tourists and that was not what I was looking for, so I found Abbey del Sol.

I travel internationally for work and pleasure and stay in excellent hotels. Abbey del Sol has so much more to offer than a large chain or an all-inclusive. It is hospitality that you will not find in any other place.

Since Abbey del Sol is owned by a husband and wife, I have found both touches are here on the property. They are so helpful with any question or concern that I might have, and having an on-site manager (who speaks English and is here with his family), everything is taken care of immediately.

I have been here for the last three years within a larger group of family and friends, as well as by myself for four weeks. I have personally seen all of the wonderful additions that have been made to the property that make Abbey del Sol exceed other five star resorts. It has everything that I need and when I have to leave to go home, I feel refreshed, relaxed, and sad to leave paradise.”

What a wonderful vacation...the friendliest people in a tropical paradise - We call it our "Garden of Abby." We found Abbey del Sol on line and were delighted when we were greeted at the airport by Jim and his spontaneous, warm, inviting smile. We immediately figured we had lucked out and when we arrived at "Abbey del Sol Too" it became apparent just how fortunate we were. The magnificent accommodations amidst the stunning manicured gardens one block from the beach and a short walk to town. What more could you ask for. Oh yes of course .... the weather!!!! Even though Abby has no control over it - it was perfect!!! We can hardly wait to return to enjoy another fabulous holiday amongst great people we are now delighted to call our friends.
